Yucca carrii (Asparagaceae), a New Species from the Northern Gulf Coast Prairie of Texas

Yucca carrii, a new species from the northern Gulf Coastal Prairie of Texas is described. Morphology indicates that carrii belongs to Section Chaenocarpa (the dry-fruited yuccas). A lack observed fruit production date and reduced pollen viability this may be hybrid origin. The sole pollinator, yucca moth, has not been documented within species' range; it extirpated. Although known few populations, wide-ranging distribution along north coast, ecological niche specificity morphological distinctiveness taxon have long history in area persists by way vegetative reproduction. It vulnerable extinction conservation measures are warranted. DNA analyses needed determine origin relationship Y. L. Examination type tenuistyla Trel. revealed nomen confusum was described mixed collection three species, none which carrii.
